The British brothers W.L.Crawford &C.S.Crawford opened up Gungegiri in 1890 around the same time as they did Kondadkan Estate. It was later on taken over by Alexander and thereafter taken over by our Founder Chairman Mr. K S Vaidyanathan who founded Sangameshwar Coffee Estates Ltd. Gungegiri was joined along with the other estates in the area to form the Karadykan Group of Estates. The coffee at Gungegiri. The hills at the estate are a source of copious water sources and ancient mythology has stories of it being as holy as water from the mighty Ganges. Hence the name “Ganga”. This fertile and landscape is a haven for a large number of peacocks. Another mention of heritage lies in The Panchalingaswar temple above the Estate which is said to be the birth place of Markhandaya. These hills have stories of their own. Coffee is grown under indigenous species of trees like Atti(Fig), Basri, Neeroli for cultivation under filtered shade. These also serve the purpose of further enhancing the unique taste profiles of the coffee.Minimum use of chemicals and major works being done manually contribute in preserving the purity of our environment with utmost care being taken to protect natural, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The plantation workers are well provided for with Housing, Free Medical facility, Creche, Electric and water supply.
